Mahavir — 24th Tirthankar
A life of Bhagwan Mahavir in one 32-page volume — the only title in this set set in a period Indian court rather than a Western storybook world.
Built with the tools of 2025
In 2025 the image models had no reliable way to hold a character across separate generations — every panel was a fresh roll of the dice. Consistency came from a reference sheet, a large pile of rejected images and hand-picking, not from the model. Generated text was not printable either, so every speech bubble and caption bar was typeset over the art afterwards. The character-reference and style-lock features that make this straightforward today did not exist yet.

One volume, 32 pages, all of them here — click any page to read it at size. I also produced the ElevenLabs voiceover for this title; that audio is not published here yet.
What was hard about this one
A different register from the other four: reverent rather than playful, and set in a period court that had to be dressed consistently — ornament, textiles, architecture. The birth ceremony is a full-page ensemble with many named figures, which in 2025 meant generating a great deal and keeping very little.
Why the year matters
At the time, no mainstream image model could take a character and reliably produce that same character in a new pose. There was no character reference, no style lock, no consistent-character mode, and generated text was not clean enough to print — which is why every speech bubble here is typeset over the art rather than generated in it.
Today much of that is a solved problem. That is exactly why the work is dated: the interesting part is not that the pages are consistent, it is what consistency cost in 2025 — and that the pipeline built a year later for the Grade-5 science book can now measure that cost instead of quietly absorbing it.
