Alice in Wonderland
Lewis Carroll's Wonderland as a two-volume colour comic — Alice, the White Rabbit, the Caterpillar and the Queen, held recognisable across every panel of both books.
Built with the tools of 2025
In 2025 the image models had no reliable way to hold a character across separate generations — every panel was a fresh roll of the dice. Consistency came from a reference sheet, a large pile of rejected images and hand-picking, not from the model. Generated text was not printable either, so every speech bubble and caption bar was typeset over the art afterwards. The character-reference and style-lock features that make this straightforward today did not exist yet.

2 volumes, 36 pages, all of them here — click any page to read it at size. I also produced the ElevenLabs voiceover for this title; that audio is not published here yet.
What was hard about this one
Alice is on almost every page, which makes her the hardest kind of character to carry in 2025: any drift in her face or her blue dress is immediately obvious to a child re-reading the book. The Dodo’s caucus race and the croquet ground were the expensive pages — crowds meant many characters had to stay on model at once.
Why the year matters
At the time, no mainstream image model could take a character and reliably produce that same character in a new pose. There was no character reference, no style lock, no consistent-character mode, and generated text was not clean enough to print — which is why every speech bubble here is typeset over the art rather than generated in it.
Today much of that is a solved problem. That is exactly why the work is dated: the interesting part is not that the pages are consistent, it is what consistency cost in 2025 — and that the pipeline built a year later for the Grade-5 science book can now measure that cost instead of quietly absorbing it.
